The much-awaited final chapter in our celebration of Italy’s supreme poet has arrived. Following last year’s Dante Alighieri: Inferno and Dante Alighieri: Purgatorio, our Divina Commedia series is completed with the release of the astonishing Dante Alighieri: Paradiso.
Dante Alighieri: Paradiso more than lives up to its name and the high standards of craftsmanship set by its predecessors. Whereas Inferno and Purgatorio reckoned with matters of sin, our tribute to the third book of the Divine Comedy symbolizes virtue and divine love in both spirit and style. The striking beauty of Dante Alighieri: Paradiso has dual significance: as a stand-alone piece, and as a gateway to one of the most accomplished collections created in our 110-year history. Its design continues the essential artisanal concept and narrative style of Inferno and Purgatorio. Once again, a Montegrappite core combines with elaborate lost wax sculpting, but this time, the earthly circles and terraces of earlier editions are replaced by Heaven’s celestial spheres. Each sphere is represented by colored stones – zirconia (silver) and precious gems (gold) – set into the length of the barrel, with labels in English and Italian. On the opposing side, scenes from Dante’s pilgrimage towards God depict his encounters with human virtue: fortitude, justice, temperance and prudence on spheres 1-7, followed by faith, hope and charity/love (sphere 8). Nine orders of angels encircle the cap, comprising the ‘Primum Mobile’ – a ninth cosmological sphere around which all else rotates. They rise towards three shining discs on the cap top, elaborating Dante’s visualization of God as the holy trinity. Glorifications on blind cap, cap rings and clip add period-correct ornamentation.
